Some weeks ago, me and a couple of colleagues (eight total) organized an event for a University project called Interactivius. It was about showing ordinary people the “latest” developments on human-computer interaction. And by that I’m not talking about usability or ergonomics, but whole new interaction research fields. The technologies shown weren’t also the state of art, but they we’re innovative enough to impress common people.

We built a set of demonstrations using movement detection, accelerometers, augmented reality and a multi-touch surface, and placed ourselves on one of the biggest shopping centres of Coimbra. On the event itself everything worked smoothly and the feedback was great.

What I would like to share is how wonderful it is to show and help others try this technologies. And the most interested weren’t the adolescents. It was the kids and the mid-age folks who had the courage to step in, play a bit and learn how it worked. I was impressed how little of this technology is known by a big number of people. Most of it is simply waiting to be applied in mainstream products. Informatics is really a young field with much to be done…
