Living in a small country in Europe gets us used to checking shipping charges every time we want to buy something online. And sometimes this is not an easy task. There are times we have to go through the whole checkout process (sometimes even inserting credit card information) to see the real cost at the end. Other times we have to dig through several help pages to find the costs table.

That’s why I found the checkout information on the Domino Store to be a refreshing improvement. You probably know Domino Records Company for being the label behind popular bands like Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand and Animal Collective. And it was due to the new “coming out” album of Franz Ferdinand, Tonight that I arrived to the Domino Store. In order to find more about the pre-order I clicked on one of those links.

And without giving any additional data, I was informed immediately of the cost of shipping my order to Portugal. They choose the cheapest delivery rate (the most common) by default, found out where I am, and present me with a final cost. They also gave me the chance to change any of those assumptions easily.

Country identification is nothing new. I’ve seen it used many times, but usually for the personalization of ads or incorrectly sending me to the Brazilian version of an website (yes, YouTube). This was the first time I remember taking really advantage from the previous knowledge of where I currently am and the first time I know an order delivery costs right on the first checkout page. Definitely an example to follow.
