FADER is a magazine about music, style and other forms of art. Maybe not your normal kind of music, since it’s mostly focused on Hip Hop and a bit of Rock. What got my attention was the fact that all issues are distributed freely on PDF. And there are 58 issues so far. Additionally every magazine comes with an mp3 file: a playlist related with each issue. And it’s not made up only of unknown artists. The current issue cover story is Kanye West.
The revenue source strikes out pretty obvious when you start reading it. It’s full with page long ads, many fashion related, targeted perfectly for the magazine’s audience. It’s also possible to subscribe a printed version.
I like this magazine for the great example it makes. If you target for a specific niche, not only with content but also with the medium and the all the environment (mp3 podcasts, ads, ...), you can also last as long as this and make a difference.
In another note, I discovered the magazine through an ad at Insound, after ordering two vinyl albums for Christmas for me. Yes, I do buy music, although only a small portion of what I hear. And since I listen most of it on the mp3 format, vinyl became my chosen format for collecting music and chill out listen times. On top of that, nothing beats those large beautiful covers.
