I know that there already dozens of websites where you can upload and share videos. But even so, Vimeo caught my attention. From the moment you enter it, you get a good feeling about it. And the fact you have a video of a good looking girl greeting you, increases the irresistible factor. The portal is not new. It’s been around since 2004, made by the team at Connected Ventures the same company who made two online t-shirt shops I mentioned some days ago.

Vimeo features

The main feature of Vimeo is the possibility to only share some (private) videos with your friends, besides the public ones you share with the hole community. Talking about the community, it seems to be pretty active, due probably to the work of the team behind the service, who is very committed in the social factor. And they try very hard to have the participation from everyone. They created a sort of to-do list as soon as you register, for you to become more familiar with Vimeo’s features.

The whole website design is gorgeous in my opinion. Although a bit childish it works really well. The flash video player is very simple, no special features, not needed I think. You can choose your favorite (Likes) video and subscribe other members activities and uploaded videos. There’s also a API for the ones who only think on taking the content out. I’m already registered. I’m not a producer, but I like to loose some time seeing random videos. If you’re already in or just joined fell free to add me as a contact, since I’m feeling lonely there…

You have to mentioned also College Humor - the flagship site of Connected Ventures and the one who gives them most, if not something like 99% of the revenue. Which enables them to support a project like Vimeo (even if the company is 51% owned by Barry Diller's http://www.iac.com/ conglomerate). Stuff like this is hilarious: http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1766123 - all of the people on the video work as staff writers or programmers on College Humor and Vimeo.
I knew that College Humor was their first project, they got famous for it. And yeah, probably they couldn't offer such a service like Vimeo if they hadn't other sources of revenue. Vimeo has very little ads and the only ones they have were custom made by team for the companies, only for their website.

If you like to met the hole Connected Ventures team then check this out this video. Must be great to work there.
