What would you get if you combine a solar panel and a battery with an outdoor WiFi repeater? The possibility to create wider wireless networks and Internet access, from local communities to emerging markets where electricity it’s still not reliable. That’s what the guys at Meraki created. As you can see in the picture, it’s a solar panel with a battery pack that regulates it’s own energy usage connected to a wireless outdoor repeater. They claim it’s the first solar repeater for the consumer market.

The Access Kit is expected to ship late this summer and the price it’s still unknown but they say it will be an affordable option. This kind of device really opens the possibilities to expand Internet access to remote and underdeveloped regions, since we can simply leave it in any sunny place and let it do its job. An increase of the number of communities sharing Internet access could also help bringing the costs of high speed connections down. And at least this solution is based on a renewable energy source.
