Today I saw a really nice video about Co-Working, over at HorsePigCow. Co-Working is about creating a space for freelancers, writers and all kind of independent business people work in a community space. When your a freelancer you usually like the fact that you only depend on yourself and that you can run your own time schedule. But you can’t really replace the social relationships you create and nourish on offices. And you usually end up thinking about work all the time. So co-working space is simply a place to gather several still independent workers in a community environment, will supplying all the working needs.
While this may seem just like you will just get more distracted, you will gain in several aspects you would usually despite. There will be people around you to inspire you, to discuss and relax you at lunch, to ask or lend a hand to or just someone you can share what your doing with. From an article over at New York Post:
People are always bouncing ideas off each other,” he says. “They’re talking in the hallways. We have a lounge that we’re turning into a bar. We have a yard with picnic tables. People start giving each other work, like ‘Hey I’m too busy right now, want to take this job?’
The video was made by the founder of The Hat Factory, a co-working space on San Francisco, a great example of this movement. There’s a lot of information about co-working and how to start up your own space on the official blog and this community wiki. There you can also find several CW spaces around the world or people trying to create one. I found that at least one Portuguese person was trying to create one. I wonder if there are spaces like this in Portugal. It would surely be a nice place to visit and take a look.
