Blog/Work: A voz do Público

A voz do Público (or in English The Public’s Voice) is study by João Pedro Pereira, the journalist of a popular Portuguese newspaper Público although the newspaper name isn’t related with the study title. This study was a seminary work for his degree on Journalism in Coimbra’s University.

The main subject of this case study is news’ websites as an open space for discussion and also the relation between journalists and readers in online journalism. In the first part the author gives an overview of the current state of the online news world, and how the readers started to make their own news and increasing the pressure on online media channels. The second part is an analysis of two specific cases of news’ websites: BBC News and Expresso Online. The focus was not on how the information was presented there to the readers, but what mechanisms the platform enabled for reader to interact, reply and discuss. It was also made a comparison on the type of comments made on articles of a specific subject, between a free and uncontrolled environment and a moderated one.

This case study is written in Portuguese, but it should deserve an English translation since the subject of the work is global and very relevant. For those of you who happen to know this beautiful language (partial opinion of course) and are interested in the current state and future of online journalism, I recommend the reading of this work.
