Here’s a nice article about the role that programmer can have on the editorial staff of a newspaper. With the increase of the web focus from journalists comes the need to have proper tools available.
The time where a decent website could be made only with HTML is long ago and if a media company wants to have a relevant presence on the web it needs a IT professional. And the opinion of a person outside of the editorial circle and without a specific degree in journalism (but with experience) could had a new kind of vision to the team. From this kind of collaboration some nice results might appear like this, a mashup that gathers information from a database of crimes in Chicago and shows the information on a Google Map.
