Getting Real is a book written by the 37signals’ team, the creators of the well known Ruby on Rails framework and several successful web applications like Basecamp and Campfire. It’s about developing web applications in a faster and easier way. Along 16 chapters, several advices are given in the form of essays, covering all the aspects of development and release. The advices are based on their previous experience with their products, and usually come with quotes from outside developers.
I just finished reading the book and it only took a couple of days. The book is written in a very simple and direct way and it has about 200 pages. I enjoyed reading it, even though I did it more for inspiration and less for reference. You can’t always apply their guidelines, specially if your developing a application for specific clients and not to be your company’s product.
I’ve read the free online version, but the book is also available in not free pdf or paper version. I’ll see if I can get my hands on the paper version since it would make a nice addition to my bookshelf.
